What is the role of PAs in family medicine?

Often times, family practices may hire what is known as a “PA” to carry a bulk of the workload. This can be confusing to anyone who’s not exactly sure what a “PA” is and what duties they have in caring for your health. What is a PA? Consider these facts as you search family doctor near me. A PA is a physician’s assistant. They are nationally certified and state licensed medical professionals. Although their specific duties will depend upon the work setting, state laws, and their speciality, most PAs can easily take in your medical history, perform exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and evaluate tests, and write prescriptions. Many PAs are also capable of assisting in surgery. According to the American Academy of Physician’s Assistants, most educational programs to become a PA are around 26 months long and require the same prerequisite courses as all other medical schools. All in all, PAs complete a total of 2,000 hours of clinical rotations in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine, and psychiatry.

When To Get A Physical

No one wants to go to the doctor, but getting physicals may just help prevent even more medical issues down the line. When is the best time to get a physical? As you search family doctor near me, keep these general guidelines in mind. If you’re under the age of 30, healthy, don’t smoke, have no disease risk factors, and don’t take prescription medicines- you only need to go in for a physical or check up every two to three years. If you’re a woman who is sexually active, you’ll want to get a pap smear to screen for cervical cancer beginning at the age of 21. Most recommended yearly exams, though not every woman is required to do so. If you’re between the ages of 30 and 40, you should get a physical every other year. This includes a baseline mammogram for women. These mammograms should be repeated every 1-2 years, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer. If you’re over the age of 50, you’ll want to get a physical and check-up every year. This is also a great time to start getting regular colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer. A colonoscopy only needs to be repeated every 10 years unless there is a family history of colon cancer, polyps, or you receive abnormal test results.

Why are check-ups important?

Now that you know when to go in for a check-up, it is time to touch upon why check ups are important in the first place. It might seem like going in for a check-up is being “overly cautious,” but in reality these regular exams can save your life. The point of regular health exams and physicals is to help find problems before they start or snowball into even bigger problems. They can also help to identify issues early on, when chances for treatment and a full cure are more possible. When you get the right health screenings and treatments, you are taking big steps that can help increase your chances for living a long and healthy life. Your age, health, family history, lifestyle choices, and how active you are play an important role in when and how often you should get a check up at your family doctor. As you search family doctor near me, consider making an appointment for an annual physical. If you haven’t done so yet, feel free to do so now!

I miss when doctors spent more time with you. Examined you with great detail then sat you down and explained everything to you. Now I feel like I’m on a production line and the dr or PA has only 15 minutes to find out what’s wrong and decided the med. I should take. I feel like all they care about is meeting their quota for the day, for the month and for the year. It’s not about taking care of the patient any more.
